From the Trail Boss

Its hard to believe that June is already over.   There sure was a lot of fun dancing during June however.   Not only just our dances, but many great dances around the area, the State Convention and also the National Square Dance Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Our first dance for June was on June 1st.   This was called by Larry Hays and was our black and white themed dance.   What a wonderful time.    We got to celebrate Larry’s birthday during our birthday song.    Unfortunately, Joyce Juhler was not feeling well and was unable to cue that evening.    Thankfully she has now recovered.

Our next fun opportunity was the State Convention.    I want to send a special thanks to all the Lone Wranglers, Buckles and Bows and Roberta Rebiskie for helping to great and sell admission during Saturday.    It seemed that time just flew by while we helped out and I know that I won’t hesitate to help out in this capacity again in the future.

Our second club dance for June was on June 15th with Larry Crady.   We really had a great time then as well.    Joyce was fully recovered and did a wonderful job of cueing.   With such a talented caller and cuer, we all had a lot of fun out on the dance floor.

I haven’t spoken to any of the attendees of the National Convention that was held in Louisville, yet, but I am sure they had a wonderful time and can’t wait to hear about the wonderful time that they had.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Sunday, July 11th in Salina.    The North Central District meeting will take place at 2:00 with a dance following at 3:00.  This should be a great opportunity to support our club and our district.  It is by participating in the meetings and district dances that we help our district to grow and prepare for the future of square dancing.

I especially want to say thank you to all of you who have been helping with our club dances.   Your participation definitely helps to make our dances a fun time for all of us as well as our visitors.   I want to also say thank you to all of you who have been traveling.

See you in a square soon.

GOD BLESS
Laura

State Convention
Thank you all for helping to make the 58th State Convention a success.  There were 24 Lone Wranglers at the convention.  Also, a BIG thank you to those who helped sell tickets, greeted guests, assisted with the parade of clubs and style show, and assisted in the many other activities which made up the convention.

Plus Lessons
Plus lessons are right around the corner.  Bill Ogden and Dana Schirmer are finalizing the start date.  The intent is to have 10 lessons on Saturdays 7:00 – 9:30 pm at our normal dance location.

June Dances
Larry Hays helped us start June off in the dancing direction.  Our theme was “black & white”; it was interesting to see all the variations assembled in the hall.  We were pleased to welcome back Joe and Monika Kienlen from Mannheim, Germany.  When in KS they have been stopping by to dance and say hello to us.    Roberta Rebiskie’s, Strato Jets, luck from April returned as she claimed the Pot of Gold.  Ardie Cooper, Buckle & Bows, and Dave Rohn headed out the door with free passes to attend another fun dance night.

We want to thank all the dancers who attended our June 15 dance with Larry Crady and Joyce Juhler.  The Topeka Wheatheart Squares chose that night to retrieve their banner.  Larry Crady might have a new fondness for Lone Wranglers’ June dances; last year at this time when he called he won the Pot of Gold and history repeated itself again this year.  It was nice to see some of our Seneca friends enjoying the dance.  John Havenkamp, Seneca, and Bill Odgen won the free passes while Larry Morgan won a free pass to a Wheatheart dance.

Focus On
Judy Speer: daughter, mother, wife, sister, grandmother.   Those are a given.  What about dancer, caller, cuer, teacher, student?  Or square dance promoter,  publicity committee chair, parade coordinator, web-site manager, newsletter editor/publisher.  Would you believe all of the above and all the while holding down a full time job?  We’ve all heard the saying: “If you want something done, ask the busiest person you know and it will get done.”  That’s our Judy Speer.

What would it be like to walk in her shoes?  How about a sample of her schedule?

Up at 5:00am; off to work by 6:30am; work straight through until 4:00pm (eat lunch while working) - Monday-Friday
After 4:00pm:  Always do dishes left from midnight snacks Phil and now grandson Steven left and pick up after them; maybe start a load or two of laundry (we go through towels quickly); sometimes if it needs to be done vacuum and dust; if it is a lesson night - go over what is going to be taught.  Sometimes make it to the gym for an hour or walk, but hasn’t been able to do that much lately.

Mondays and Thursdays - Leave at 5:45pm to car pool to Square Dance lessons in JC.  Home by 9:30-9:45 then off to bed.
Tuesdays - Watch granddaughter because daughter has study group.  Practice and study what will be taught at lessons on Thursday.
Wednesdays - Visit a 92 year old lady that is homebound from 5:30pm - 8:30pm.  Walk about 3 miles round trip to get in some exercise.  Afterwards finish any laundry that was started or try to look over the next night’s lesson plan.
Friday - Most definitely vacuum, dust, and clean downstairs, get as much laundry done as possible, babysit if daughter has plans.
Saturday - Up at 6:00 (get an hour of extra sleep, yea) vacuum, dust and clean upstairs, try to sort through mess in upstairs office, work in yard if it’s not raining, shop for food, finish laundry, babysit granddaughter - sometimes she stays overnight.
Sunday - Try to sleep in until 6:00 again - depends on if granddaughter spent the night.  Pay bills and catch up on what has been put in upstairs office during the week.  Usually always work on something related to square dance be it lessons, caller school handouts or tapes, newsletters, publicity materials - whatever is happening at that time.

“People don’t realize how much time is needed to develop lessons, practice singing calls and work on patter, especially patter.  I am really on a quest to get as many new dancers as I possibly can and that means conducting lessons more than once a year.  So even though I am not physcially at a dance, my spirit is.”

Judy took lessons with the Lone Wranglers in the fall of 2004.  She immediately became a member and the Messenger for the club along with becoming Computer Liaison for the Special Events Committee for the 57th National Convention.  In June 2005, she was elected Recording Secretary for the KSDA.  She held that position until 2009.  She started round dance lessons with Joyce Juhler in October 2005.  Became an angel and helped with squares, lines and rounds.  Attended Pam Young’s Mini Cuer Seminar and Dana Schirmer’s Kaw Valley Caller School in 2007. Recently she became a member of Junction City’s Buckles and Bows and was elected Publicity Chair.  In her spare time, she took up boxing, clogging, belly dancing.  Now there’s barely time to go walking.
